To My Beloved Thief

Detailed Synopsis: To My

Beloved Thief (Episodes 1–8)

The Legend of Gil-dong and the Physician’s Life
The story begins in the district of Haeminseo, where the air is thick with rumors about a legendary figure named Gil-dong. To the common folk, Gil-dong is a righteous thief—a Robin Hood who steals from the corrupt rich to feed the starving poor. However, no one knows his true identity; some claim he is a 100-year-old monk, others a handsome noble, and some even whisper he is a monster.
In reality, the "thief" is Hong Eun-jo, a kind-hearted and talented female physician working at Haeminseo. Eun-jo is the daughter of a concubine, which relegates her to a low social standing despite her father Hong Min-je’s noble roots. To save her family from financial ruin and provide for her sick mother, Eun-jo secretly dons a mask and acts as Gil-dong, targeting corrupt officials like Chief Censor Kim.
The Prince and the Unexpected Encounter
Grand Prince Yi Yeol is a charismatic but somewhat rebellious royal who is fascinated by the tales of Gil-dong. Unlike the authorities who want the thief executed, Yeol is intrigued by the drawings Gil-dong leaves behind at crime scenes. He suspects that the rumors are being manipulated by the thief himself.
Yeol’s life takes a turn when he encounters Eun-jo in the marketplace. At the time, Yeol is dressed in rags after an accident involving dirty water. Seeing him being bullied by a nobleman’s son and mistaking him for a helpless slave, Eun-jo steps in to protect him, claiming he is a slave from her household. This "rescue" fascinates Yeol, who is struck by her bravery and beauty.
The two meet again on a rainy night in Soha Village. Eun-jo, facing the grim reality of an impending forced marriage to a dying old man (the father of Secretary Im), decides to live "one night as a woman" rather than a sacrificial daughter. In a moment of impulsive passion, she kisses Prince Yeol under the moonlight and flees, leaving the Prince stunned and obsessed with finding her.
The Forced Marriage and the Body-Swap
Eun-jo’s world collapses when she learns that her father traded her hand in marriage to Secretary Im’s ailing father to clear the family’s debts. On her wedding day, as she enters her new home, her elderly husband passes away before the ceremony is completed, leaving her a "virgin widow"—a social death sentence in the Joseon era.
Simultaneously, a mysterious political conspiracy unfolds. Chief Censor Kim is murdered, and Gil-dong is framed for the crime. While trying to investigate the murder in her thief persona, Eun-jo is chased by the police and falls near a mystical well. At that exact moment, she and Prince Yeol—who is miles away in the palace—experience a surge of energy from matching bracelets given to them by a mysterious monk.
They swap bodies.
Living Each Other’s Lives
The middle episodes focus on the chaotic and humorous struggle of the duo trying to navigate their switched identities:
Eun-jo (in Yeol’s body): Must handle the pressures of the Royal Court and the suspicions of the Queen Dowager. She uses her medical knowledge to discover that King Ye-gyu is being slowly poisoned by toxic incense distributed by Secretary Im.
Yeol (in Eun-jo’s body): Must endure the hardships of a widow in a hostile household. He is horrified to find that Eun-jo was treated like a slave and targeted by Sung-jae and Jae-yi (Secretary Im's sons).
Through this swap, Yeol realizes the depth of Eun-jo's sacrifice and her secret life as Gil-dong. He vows to protect her, not just as a Prince, but as a man who has literally walked in her shoes.
Political Turmoil and Restoration
The body-swap ends as abruptly as it began during a moment of extreme danger. A mysterious organization (linked to the historical "Gyeong-oh Year" purge) attempts to recruit Eun-jo, believing she is the true Gil-dong. As swords are drawn, the bracelets glow again, returning them to their original bodies.
Yeol immediately takes action to save Eun-jo from the Im family. He offers her a formal marriage proposal, intending to use his royal status to pull her out of her "widow" status. However, Eun-jo's father, Min-je, opposes the union, fearing that the King will use Eun-jo as a political pawn against Yeol.
The Climax: The Leper Camp Attack
The final episodes of this segment (7–8) center on the Leper Camp. Secretary Im’s sons, wanting to clear the land for a royal hunting ground, fabricate a "plague" to justify burning the camp and killing its inhabitants.
Eun-jo rushes to the camp to save the orphans and the sick. As the camp is set ablaze and arrows fly, Jae-yi fires a flaming arrow directly at Eun-jo while she is shielding a child. At the last possible second, Prince Yeol arrives on horseback, intercepting the arrow and saving her life.
Key Characters
Hong Eun-jo (The Physician/Thief): A woman of immense strength who carries the weight of her family and the poor on her shoulders.
Prince Yi Yeol: A royal who finds his purpose through his love for a "lowly" physician and his pursuit of justice.
Secretary Im: The primary antagonist whose greed and manipulation of the King threaten the stability of the kingdom.
Jae-yi: Im's son who oscillates between being a rival to the Prince and a complicated figure in Eun-jo's past.
Themes
Class Struggle: The drama highlights the vast divide between the nobility and the "Beak-jeong" (outcasts).
Identity: Both through the Gil-dong mask and the literal body-swap, the characters explore what it means to be oneself.
Sacrifice: Eun-jo’s willingness to enter a sham marriage to save her father serves as the emotional core of the early episodes.
